It is one of the oldest questions past down through history. Generation after generation, person after person, all trying to figure out the answers to the overwhelming questions. Who am I? What is my purpose? Where do I fit in such a big world? Have you ever asked any of these questions? You are not alone. Most people at one time or another, have asked themselves these questions. Most failing to deliver an answer of value.

Truth is, the knowledge of our identity are broken into two categories, who we think we are, and who God says we are. If I were to ask you to introduce yourself, what would you say? Something along the lines of: My name is ___, I a Mother of___, or a Father of___, I am a Husband. I am a Wife. I work at ___. I am a good person, I enjoy___. Sound familiar? So often we use our titles and passions to determine who we are. However, so often who we are in about what we have, instead of what we were born with or for. We try to dig deep and open up with one another, but only seem to scratch the surface. What we know about ourselves is limited down to only our experience. Which is the reason that i can only go so deep.

Now what would happen if we were to go deeper. How would we do that? First we would need to find something or someone who would know us on a different level. Which would mean we would have to look at time before our physical existence. Before the time of our conception. Who is credible enough to do this? Its simple.

God.

In Jeremiah 1:5, God tells the prophet just how intimately he knows him. He tells him; "Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you, before you were born, I set you apart, I appointed you a prophet to the nations."

Here God is telling the prophet Jerimiah that before he was even a thought to this world he was not only a thought, but a person to the mind of God. A person with an identity, a purpose, and inheritance. God has already answered the questions that we have been asking for generations. So who are we to God? And who does he tell us we are?

First, We Were Created. God starts off in the book of Genesis (the book of beginning) telling us that we are created in His image.

Chapter 1 verses 26-27

And God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over the earth." So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him, male and female He created.

Our identity of who we are is designed in the likeness of who God is. It is our character that defines us. We can say that we are loving, and kind because we were created in the image of a loving and kind God. He is also holy and righteous, which allows us to live a life as so. The want to do good deeds, or be a honest person, and keep peace all stems from the fact that we were made to be just like our Father, and Creator.

We Belong. Through our faith in Jesus Christ we become not only God's creation but also apart of His family. We find this in Romans chapter 8 verses 15-17

"For you have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear, but we have received the Spirit of adoption, where we cry Abba Father. The Spirit itself bear witness with our spirit, that we are the children of god. And if children, then heirs,, heirs of god and joint heirs with Christ; if so we suffer with Him that we may be also glorified together."

Through His spirit we are welcomed in God's kingdom and family. Because of God's amazing love for us, He views us as His children. Everyone is offered this beautiful opportunity, all they have to do is put their faith in Christ Jesus.

We Have Purpose. God has made you to do great things. He has created us to do the good works of Jesus Christ. Works that please the Father, help those around us and ourselves. It is the greatest calling and purpose that a person can have. The works of God are simple. Titus chapter 3 tells us some of them.

Speak evil of no one

Bring peace

Be gentle

Be humble

Deny ungodliness and worldly lusts

Live righteously and Godly in the present age

Pursue opportunities to do good.

Speak good and rebuke evil with the authority given to us in the name of Jesus.

In other words, doing all the things that bring good in the world and reveals and glorifies Jesus. This way others may see your works and know who you serve and that it might bring them to want to know Him as well.

We Are Wanted And Loved. We were bought with a price. Even though we have rejected god and broken His laws, Christ came so that we might be reunited with God. Through Christ, God Himself has demonstrate the highest act of love: to give His life for the ransom of many. God is willing to do anything to have a relationship with us. including loosing his life, that we might live.

We Are Chosen. We are hand picked by God. He has chosen Humanity to be the apple of his eye. God, has specifically designed you and I for Himself. That we may live in Eternity with Him. That we may reign with Him over a just and perfect world. No longer plagued with death, sickness, and sin. 1 Peter 2:9 It says;

"But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people; that you should show forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into marvelous light; Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy."

In the beginning God knew He wand to create us. In Ephesians 1:4, the bible tells us that God chose us even before the world was ever created. Everything about you He loves. Every flaw you have does is nothing to Him. He looks at you and deems you worthy.

God has chosen to give everything He has for you to know how valuable you are. How loved you and I are. Though this world may bruise us. All though trials can try to shape who we are, It can not take what they did not create. No person, No situation, No hardship can make you less than. You are chosen, you are loved, you are created in His image. There is purpose in you. You are not a mistake, but a well designed creation that is beautiful in the eyes of our God. If you are struggling to know who you are. Who better to ask than the one that created you. Only He can tell you what you are and what you are not. Ask Him and He will reveal you the answer.
